Legionella is a type of bacteria most commonly found in water. It thrives in temperatures between 20 and 45°C. When legionella-affected water droplets are inhaled from the air, it can lead to the contraction of Legionnaires’ disease, which is a potentially fatal class of pneumonia. Water droplets that are affected by legionella are usually produced by both hot and cold water systems including sink faucets, hot water tanks and air conditioning systems. The build-up of these water droplets makes managing your water systems vital in keeping people safe and preventing the development of Legionnaires’ disease, which is where Primary Water Solutions come in.
Following an initial legionella control assessment at your property, our water hygiene consultants will provide you with professional advice based on your property’s individual requirements. We offer a cost-effective strategy to manage, remove and prevent legionella from developing in your water systems again.
The most commonly used technique to control Legionella, is by tactically managing water temperature. We know that legionella bacteria multiply in temperatures between 20 and 45°C so, to avoid this, water systems should be operated at temperatures that prevent its growth. Hot water stored in cylinders should be stored at 60°C or above. Cold water is stored and distributed in environments below 20°C, while hot water is stored and distributed in environments of 50°C and up.
As well as controlling water temperatures, a water hygiene trained individual should routinely check, monitor and clean your water system in line with the results of your legionella risk assessment in Cardiff. Our team of water hygiene consultants are able to provide water hygiene training in Cardiff and South Wales, making sure your chosen individual(s) is able to manage the risks.
